KEYNOTE SPEAKER: The Rev. Lisle Gwynn Garrity is an artist, ordained Presbyterian pastor, retreat leader, and creative entrepreneur. She has a BA in Arts from Davidson College, Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA, Master of Practical Theology from Columbian Theological Seminary. As founder of A Sanctified Art, a collaborative arts collective creating multimedia resources for churches, Lisle and her team resource worshiping congregations all across the globe. She travels frequently as a retreat leader and artist-in-residence. Based in the beautiful rolling hills of Black Mountain, NC, with her husband Paul, Lisle can often be found running with the wiggly pups, Max & Maven, drinking matcha tea lattes she makes herself, or tending to her ever growing indoor and outdoor garden.
Amy Hudson, Executive Director of Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of High Point, will share the many ways that women are already peacemakers in their families and everyday life, and how this can be carried into the community for a successful future for our city.
2. Growing Peacemakers
Pastor Megan Argabrite, Amity Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC, will share inspiring stories of young peacemakers and offer hands-on techniques and activities to take home to practice as families.
3. Meditation/Mindfulness Yoga
Jennie Latimer taught yoga for 17 years, will teach the ethical principles, which include truth, contentment, non-stealing, and non-hoarding. Mindfulness reflects a heightened sense of love and care for oneself, others and for this planet on which we live.
4. Wonderful Words of Life — Writing New Words to Old Tunes
Elizabeth Gulley, Director of Music, First Presbyterian Church, High Point, will lead an informal discussion about some of our beloved hymns and songs, looking at why some songs resonate so effectively. The group will apply those ideas to create a new text set to a familiar tune. We hope to use this new song to end our retreat!
5. Biblical Women as Peacemakers
Dr. Erin Bowers, Associate Minister, First Presbyterian Church, High Point, NC. Sarah, Rahab, Ruth, Deborah, Esther, the Samaritan Woman at the Well, Mary and Martha, Mary Magdalene and more...so many of our biblical heroines seem to cause a stir in their own lives, so many seem to go against the grain. And yet, we can also call them peacemakers. Is it possible that this is what it takes to be a peacemaker — shaking things up a little bit? Is it possible that living at peace doesn't mean living in quiet satisfaction with the status quo? Come and study the lives of these biblical women to find out what they have to teach us about being peacemakers in our own lives.
6. Unleash Your Inner Artist as you learn to paint a seasonal wreath in watercolor!
Julie Traywick, former art teacher & member of First Presbyterian Church, High Point, will teach how to paint a variety of leaves as well as hand lettering to create your own "Peace" wreath. You will leave with an original piece of art.
7. Coloring Mandalas
Betsy Griffith grew up in Turkey and learned to draw mandalas. She has perfected the art of creating these intricate drawings that you can color. "Coloring" Betsy's mandalas is relaxing, meditative and also just plain fun.
